The Stirling Energy Module (SEM) is based on a maintenance-free machine, which works according to the well-known Stirling process (STICORE: Stirling Core Unit). The SEM represents high technology on the basis of well-proved mechanical engineering.
The STICORE-technology can look back upon a long history:
| Year | Event |
| 1816 | The patent for the Stirling process is granted |
| 1976 | The piston free Stirling engine is invented |
| 1994 | The project STICORE is started by SIG Schweizerische Industrie-Gesellschaft |
| 1997 | First STICORE experimental model |
| 1999 | Patent for STICORE piston mechanics is granted |
| 1999 | Specific FLOX-burner is adapted on STICORE |
| 2002 | Successful laboratory tests with prototypes |
| 2003 | Long-term tests successfully finished with prototypes |
| 2004 | Foundation of Stirling Systems Ltd. |
| 2005 | Start of field tests phase with Stirling Energy Modules (SEMs) |
